LEAD GENERATION
How to improve lead quality before increasing ad spend
Connect your message, form and sales feedback so more enquiries become useful conversations.

Give lead quality an operational definition
“Bad leads” is too vague to improve. Separate wrong service, unsupported location, unrealistic timing, duplicate submission and genuine interest that has not yet become a purchase. Each reason points to a different response.
Agree on a small set of fields that helps the team classify enquiries consistently. Record only information needed for the process and keep access limited to people handling the work.
Look upstream at the promise
Broad messages can attract people with very different expectations. Read the ad and the landing page as someone encountering your business for the first time. Is the service clear? Is the intended audience obvious? Does the page explain any important limitation?
You do not need a long disclaimer. Often a specific description of the work, the delivery area and the next step does more to establish fit than extra persuasive language.
Use the form to start a useful conversation
Add a qualification question only when the answer changes what happens next. Project type, service area or intended timeline may be more useful than a long list of personal details. Explain unfamiliar terms.
Keep labels visible, mark required fields and provide helpful errors. W3C’s forms guidance recommends clear instructions and feedback; a confusing form can exclude suitable customers as easily as unsuitable ones.
Audit follow-up before blaming acquisition
Review whether enquiries reached the correct person and whether a response was actually attempted. A lead marked “unresponsive” may have received an unclear message or a call at an unsuitable time. Keep a record of the agreed process.
Make the first response relevant to the request. Confirm the service, ask the next necessary question and explain what happens afterwards. Avoid overwhelming a new enquiry with a generic sales script.
Close the loop with a regular review
Group lead outcomes by campaign or source when the data allows it. Discuss patterns with both marketing and sales. If most unsuitable requests ask for a service you do not offer, fix the message before adding more questions to the form.
Judge improvement over a comparable period and account for sales-cycle delays. More spend should follow a clearer understanding of quality, capacity and cost—not simply a lower cost per submission.
